CITY OF NATCHEZ JOB DESCRIPTION___

TITLE: Engineering Tech II

EFFECTIVE DATE: 4.23.2024

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: FULL TIME, REGULAR

DEPARTMENT: ENGINEERING SERVICES

REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

SALARY RANGE: COMMENSURATE W/ EXPERIENCE & BENEFITS

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: This is paraprofessional engineering work in providing day-to-day activities of new construction projects and computer aided drafting activities.

Work involves responsibility for performing technical paraprofessional engineering assignments requiring the application of moderate engineering and surveying knowledge. Independence and judgement are exercised in planning and carrying out assignments.

Performance is evaluated through occasional inspections and observations to determine adherence to stated objectives and conformity with accepted engineering principles.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Public Works Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares preliminary designs for less complex municipal public works improvements such as small relocation and extensions of storm sewers, pavement widening or resurfacing, drainage channelization, bridges, renovations of city-owned buildings, recreation facilities and parks.

Lays out and prepares engineering drawings; prepares preliminary and final plans for public works construction projects; sets preliminary and final grades; computes traverses; calculates quantities and cost estimates; prepares drafts of construction specifications; reviews plans for new subdivisions.

Construction inspection of miscellaneous projects; conducts the inspection and material testing activities; resolves problems encountered during construction and recommends minor plan modifications.

Performs research on old projects, Infrastructure and Deeds through office files and courthouse records to assist with developing solutions to current issues or projects.

Assists professional engineering and surveying personnel in implementing data processing programs in such areas as database management, roadway geometrics, and property line calculations.

Performs related work as required while maintaining all files and documents related to any city infrastructure or projects.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school supplemented by college level courses in engineering technology, and considerable progressively responsible experience in sub-professional engineering work appropriate to the area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Moderate knowledge of the standard terminology, techniques and practices of engineering technology and land surveying appropriate to the area of assignment.

Knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry.

Knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques of standard public works construction and maintenance.

Knowledge of the elementary principles and practices of civil engineering.

Ability to plan and use proper work methods and procedures.

Ability to make engineering drawings and mathematical computations with the use of computer aided design software.

Ability to make independent investigations of engineering problems.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Skill in the use and care of engineering drafting equipment and other related equipment employed in the area of assignment.

Knowledge in the use of Computer Software (or willingness to learn) including Computer Aided Design Software, Electronic Data Collection and Word Processing. Knowledge in this area would be a plus but is not required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch crawl and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works outside in various weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving vehicles and is sometimes exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations. The employee regularly views a computer screen and is exposed to different types of indoor lighting.
